Course ID:  cellbiology
Course Name:  Cell Biology & Embryology
Description:  Cell Biology: The study of the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and chemistry of the cell with emphasis on growth, nutrition and development. A lesson series emphasizing the morphological and chemical make-up of cells, the physical and chemical properties of the cell, and the modern techniques for investigation of cellular functions and its relation to health and longevity. In on site laboratory students learn the Papanicolaou staining method for making in house Pap smears, bronchial biopsies, etc. Embryology: Science of the origin and development of the organism from fertilization of the ovum to the end of pregnancy including all stages of the life cycle with special emphasis on maternal gestation, disorders and nutrition. Of all the problems in biology, none are more challenging than those of development-the mechanisms whereby, under the guidance of the genes, there emerges from a single-celled beginning, an integrated multicelled organism. Developing organisms follow specific patterns of growth and differentiation that are genetically programmed long before expression occurs. Genetic errors lead to well known diseases. Course also serves as a primer into practical aspects of obstetrics and gynecology.
